How to sell gold by post safely

Selling gold by post can be simple and convenient. A little preparation helps you stay in control at every step, from your first enquiry to deciding whether to accept an offer.

1. Decide what you want to sell

Gather the items together and set aside anything you may want to keep. Pieces with sentimental, designer or antique value, and some gold coins, can be worth more as they are than for their gold content, so consider that before selling.

It helps to know what we buy: gold jewellery, broken gold, chains, rings, bracelets, earrings, watches containing gold and coins. Every item is assessed individually, and not every item can be bought.

2. Check for marks

Look inside ring bands, near clasps and on the back of pendants for small stamped numbers such as 375, 585, 750 or 916. These can indicate gold fineness. Our UK hallmarks guide explains what to look for. Items without marks can still be enquired about.

3. Enquire before you send anything

Always make contact first. Use the enquiry form or call Joe on 07960 148124, describing your items and an approximate quantity or weight if you know it. We will confirm how to send your items, and the applicable payment and return terms, before anything is posted.

4. Keep your own records

5. Pack carefully and use the agreed method

Use only the sending method agreed with us. Pack items so they cannot move around or be seen through the packaging, and keep the outside plain with no indication of the contents. Do not send cash, and do not include personal documents or information that has not been requested.

If you are concerned about the value of what you are sending, check what cover your chosen postal service provides before posting.

6. Assessment and your offer

When your items arrive, they are assessed for metal type, fineness and weight. You then receive an offer to review. Read more in how gold is assessed.

7. Accept or decline — it is your choice

Nothing is sold until you have reviewed and accepted an offer. If you decide not to accept, your items are handled according to the return terms confirmed with you before the transaction. Please read our terms and conditions before sending valuable items.

Prefer not to post?

If you would rather not send items by post, you can ask about a gold collection. Availability is confirmed for your postcode when you enquire.
